Homeschool Math, Recipes

We love math picture books, especially those with edible Math activities and recipes!

My children discovered a whole collection of math books at the library over the summer and theystill reference them in their daily lives.

They are budding little mathematicians that love to find right angles, natural patterns, and numbers in their favorite games.

Keeping math fun has been an integral part of our homeschool for years.

We strive for hands-on math activities that make lasting impressions on our kids.

The basis of the Fibonacci snack sticks is to create the Fibonacci pattern using foods that are easily skewered on kebab sticks!

The children used cut up fruits, marshmallows, and gummy bears to create their patterns.

Fibonacci Facts: This was such a fun activity for the children. Not only did they enjoy a hands-onactivity that dealt with predicting numbers, but they learned some fun facts about the mathematician Fibonacci!

  • Did you know Fibonacciwas an Italian mathematician during the Middle Ages and lived from 1170 to 1250?
  • Rabbits were to blame for the discovery of the famous Fibonaccipattern. Fibonacci was investigating a problem involving the growth and population of rabbits.
  • The Fibonacci pattern is found throughout nature. The seed head of a sunflower and the outer skin of a pineapple, for instance, both have a consecutive Fibonacci number of spirals.
  • The Fibonacci pattern of numbers begins 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21,….and continues to infinity! Do you see the pattern? The Fibonacci sequence adds the two previous numbers to get the next: 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8, 5+8=13, 8+13=21, and so on.
