Author Notes

Piqued your interest, or maybe your ire? The G.O.P does not refer to the Republican Party, but the Ginger Orange Pomegranate flavors of the drink. When the “up in flames” contest was announced, I knew I wanted to make a flaming pousse-café. I looked through my liquor selection, and determined I wanted to combine Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur with PAMA pomegranate liqueur. I needed a bridge (both in color and flavor) and since I had some fresh oranges I added orange juice to the mix. The flavor combo worked well, but was a bit sweet and not boozy enough. The color combo was nice, but the PAMA ended up in the middle instead of on top – I wanted more of an ombre effect with clear on bottom, orange in middle, and red on top. Vodka to the rescue on both counts. By mixing PAMA and vodka I was able to layer it on top of the orange juice and improve the balance of flavor. A small layer of hundred proof vodka on top gave me the flames I wanted. Bottoms up! - hardlikearmour —hardlikearmour

Test Kitchen Notes

Once you get the layering technique down (a baster works perfectly), you’ll be hooked on the gorgeous flavors and stunning colors. Then comes the inevitable fever, for which there’s only one prescription: more G.O.P. Up in Flames. And then, by the time you’ve assembled your third round, you’re a pro at it and your friends are showering you with love. - TiggyBee —TiggyBee

What You'll Need

Ingredients
  • 1/2 ounceginger liqueur
  • 3/4 ouncefresh orange juice, strained to remove pulp
  • 1/2 ouncepomegranate liqueur
  • 1/2 ouncevodka (80 or 100 proof based on preference)
  • additional 100 proof vodka (or other high proof clear liquor)
Directions
  1. Pour ginger liqueur into 2.5 oz tall & skinny shot-type glass.
  2. Rest spoon inside glass with convex surface up, and tip resting on inner side of glass. Very carefully and slowly pour orange juice onto spoon so that it runs down inner side of glass in a gentle stream. The slower this happens the better the separation of layers.
  3. Mix pomegranate liqueur and vodka together, and pour into glass carefully using the same process as the orange juice.
  4. Pour a thin layer of the high proof vodka onto the surface of the pomegranate layer. Dim the lights, and light your shot. I'm not brave enough to drink it on fire, so I recommend blowing out the flame before drinking it! You can either drink it like a shot, or stir and sip.
  5. (Cooks note: I got my best separation of layers using a 30 ml syringe to drizzle the liquids down the inside of the glass, and recommend using this method for crisp layers. You can typically find them at feed stores or medical supply stores)

hardlikearmour April 7, 2011

The ginger liqueur is incredible. We were at a friend's dinner party, and a group of 8 of us polished of a bottle in one night.!

boulangere April 7, 2011

Who drove home?

hardlikearmour April 7, 2011

It's only 28% alcohol, so each person had about 2 T of pure alcohol over the course of several hours.

boulangere April 7, 2011

Just a joke!

hardlikearmour April 7, 2011

No worries! I just don't want anyone to think I'm advocating drinking and driving!

TiggyBee March 24, 2011

loving this!!!

hardlikearmour March 24, 2011

me too! the comments have been great.

TiggyBee March 26, 2011

I swear, if you look closely, there's a bit of a mitt shaped thingy on the bottom of the glass and some sort of a newt-ish looking deal, smack dab in the middle and floating on the top near the flame is a wicked comb-over. I'm off to hunt for the pomegranate liqueur today.

fiveandspice March 26, 2011

TiggyBee, that is beyond hilarious! :)

Sagegreen March 26, 2011

TiggyBee, you are so creatively perceptive! I just got some PAMA so I can make this when special friends visit next month for a special toast.

drbabs March 26, 2011

TiggyBee, you rock, too!

hardlikearmour March 26, 2011

Oh, TiggyBee, you are a riot!

boulangere March 24, 2011

You need to send this whole thing to Jon Stewart!

hardlikearmour March 24, 2011

That would be a hoot!

boulangere March 24, 2011

For a change, I'm actually not kidding!

betteirene March 23, 2011

Oh, the flavors! Beautiful, just beautiful--and it looks good, too. I used to think that there was no drink more beautiful than a sweaty glass of iced sweet tea with a lemon pinwheel on it.

I hope it's easier to swallow than some of the stuff the other GOP tries to ram down our throats. Did I really say that? You betcha! : D

hardlikearmour March 23, 2011

You crack me up!

boulangere March 23, 2011

I am howling! This is too great!

drbabs March 26, 2011

Oh, betteirene, in case I haven't said this often enough, you ROCK!!

Table9 March 21, 2011

Love the title! Brilliant. Recipe sounds amazing too. I was also developing a flaming co*cktail recipe, but yours is just too divine...back to the drawing board.

hardlikearmour March 22, 2011

There's always room for more flaming co*cktails, and you always have great recipes! Bring it on.

Lizthechef March 21, 2011

As I lifelong political liberal, I wish you had picked another name for your incredible recipe. On the other hand, I have spent 24 hours trying for a suggestion - no go. This is a spectacular recipe! Big thumbs up!

hardlikearmour March 21, 2011

Sorry, Liz! I really couldn't help myself.

mrslarkin March 22, 2011

I've got it! I'm gonna nickname this awesome drink Sex On Fire, and sip it while listening to Kings of Leon. Reminds me of Sex On The Beach a little. The, um, co*cktail? ;)

hardlikearmour March 23, 2011

That's a much more PC name than mine! Though it makes me wonder about your sex life a little bit, mrslarkin ;)

Lusty D. March 21, 2011

Kitchen B. March 21, 2011

It looks lovely - a big well done to your brother. Was he making up for years of being the 'not-best brother in the world'....like mine would? Anyhow, really superb!

hardlikearmour March 21, 2011

Lucky for me, my brother has been pretty decent, so he doesn't have to make up for anything!

BoulderFoodie March 21, 2011

I love it! I am nominating it for official drink of the DNC! Thanks for the laugh!

hardlikearmour March 21, 2011

Maybe I should try to market it ;)

hardlikearmour March 20, 2011

I chugged, my brother stirred and sipped. It goes down really easily!
