Gingerbread Latte Recipe - Why battle the crowds for high priced drinks? (1)

I love coffee and coffee related drinks. Especially around the holidays. And I’ve been known to have a latte now and then although I do need to be careful because the dairy sometimes upsets my stomach. I don’t like it when that happens, but I risk it sometimes for a decadent drink. And fortunately, a lot of coffee shops and chains (coughPaneracough) now have alternatives like almond milk.

You know what else don’t like? Hectic holiday crowds. Standing in lines. Forking over an ungodly amount of money for a beverage. Trying to not spill as I traverse the dreary parking lot to my faraway car, drink in one hand, umbrella in the other; 5-year old tugging at my coat, asking 100 questions a minute, and wildly splashing my clothes anytime we pass a large puddle. Enter the Homemade Gingerbread Latte!

You know what I do like? Warm firesides. A nice pair of warm socks caressing my toes. The smell of freshly made holiday baked goods filling the house. The sound of my kids playing joyfully in the next room. And a warm drink in my hand! I can’t tell you what quite times like this mean to me. They are soul restoring. That’s why I love learning to make my own homemade drinks so that I don’t have to fight the crowds in public. We’ve written about a number of our favorite warm drinks on this blog: We love our Chai Spiced Cider. It’s hard to beat a good Chai Latte. And then when the holiday season rolls around we know it’s time for baking gingerbread cookies and breaking out this gingerbread latte recipe.

Do you feel me? Why stand in line at Starbucks waiting for your favorite limited time flavored drink when you can be enjoying a gingerbread latte at home. On your couch. In your pajamas! 🙂

Gingerbread is such a festive flavor and a perfect match for a holiday latte. I first decided I needed to make gingerbread lattes while making gingerbread cookies with our kids…a yearly holiday tradition in our house.

A latte is just espresso, steamed milk, and a little milk foam–plus a little added something if it is a flavored latte (hello caramel!). We don’t have an espresso machine, so I just used very strong coffee in the french press. We just put the spices and molasses in with the ground coffee beans in the bottom of the french press, pour the water over, and 5 minutes later, gingerbread spiced coffee! If you don’t have a french press, I think you could easily mix the dry spices in with your ground coffee and stir in a little molasses when you pour your coffee.

For the steamed milk, I actually have one of the little fancyplug-in milk frother machines. A little indulgent for sure. I think it was a birthday present one year. I have talked to friends that have the little hand held frother that costs under $20. Or, I recently saw a video where you just pour your milk in amason jar, screw the lid on tightly, shake it shake it shake it, heat in the microwave, and voila.

If you aren’t familiar with a french press, this is a great in-depth article from the Kitchn describing all the ins and outs of the french press coffee.

You know have no excuses. This gingerbread latte has your name on it!
