FAMILY EXCLUDED Barrymore's Estate Left to Close Friend Chicago Tribune Service LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2. -All members of the Barrymore theatrical family were cut off from sharing in the $25.000 estate left by Lionel Barrymore, 76. veteran of stage, screen, radio and TV, it was disclosed yesterday when his will was filed for probate in Superior Court.
Named as sole beneficiary in the document was Miss Florence Rozelle Wheeler, 40, in whose home at nearby Chatsworth Barrymore lived during the last 18 years of his life. The will was dated Feb. 24, 1950. He died Nov. 15.
Long Time Friend The will declared that Miss Wheeler was a friend of many years' standing. Friends of the Union To Buy Out Transit Company TACOMA. Wash. (R--Bus workers in this city of 145,000 are going to buy out the privately owned system in a two-million-dollar deal, Officials of the Tacoma Transit Co. and the AFL Motor Coach Employes Union announced yesterday a plan calling for union members to buy the firm's stock through a payroll deduction plan and to retain the present company officials.
The company has 250 employes. family said that she had aided in nursing Barrymore as well as his late wife, Irene Fenwick, during their last illnesses. Barrymore directed that in the event Miss Wheeler or her mother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Wheeler, died before him Miss Wheeler's two sisters, Mrs. Mary Wheeler Campbell and Miss Violet Wheeler, would share the estate.
The document specified that anyone succeeding in establishing claim to the estate should receive no more than $1. The probate petition listed as Barrymore's only heirs at law his sister, Actress Ethel Barrymore, and two nieces and a nephew, Diana Barrymore, Dolores Barrymore and John Barrymore, Jr. Diana is the daughter of the late John Barrymore by his marriage to Michael Strange, novelist. Dolores and John, are John Barrymore's children by Dolores Costello, one time leading lady of the screen. Value Questionable Friends said the estate consisted of real and personal property but that much of it was of questionable value.
Among the personal effects are etchings, paintings, and other works of art executed by Barrymore. Assets also include royalties from books which could enhance the estate's value considerably. S. nar- cotics agents, working with police of four nations, have smashed an international ring which planned to pour narcotics into the United States through Italy and France. Coordinated raids in Turkey, Syria and Lebanon swept up 27 traffickers and led 10 confiscation of 888 pounds of crude opium, 44 pounds of morphine base, 9 pounds of hashish. Simultaneously, Lebanese customes officers led by Capt. Edemond Azzizeh swooped down on a clandestine laboratory in Beirut.
Charles Siragusa U. S. Narcotics Bureau district supervisor for Europe and the Middle East with headquarters here, directed four months of patient undercover work leading up to the weeklong series of raids just ended. Impersonating a U. S.
Air Force pilot willing to smuggle dope in his plane, Siragusa personally made the biggest haul-550 pounds of opium. Begins in Middle East U. S. narcotics agents traveled to the Middle East because it is from there that dope begins its secret voyage to America. Turkey is the main production point.
From there opium is smuggled to intermediate transshipment pointsusually Beirut, Lebanon, or Aleppo, Syria, The next stop is Marseille. France, or Naples, Genoa or Palermo. Italy. A dramatic seizure took place Nov. 20 on a lonely road six miles outside Adana, Turkey's fourth largest city.
With the aid of Turkish police, Siragusa had been put in contact with Ahmet Ozsayar, king of Turkish dope smugglers. Siragusa played the part of a corrupt American pilot. Gerasimos Liarommatis, director of Greek security police in Athens, pretended he was the buyer to whom the pilot would smuggle the dope. Ozsayar and his assistant were arrested. Later, the three more arrests were made, including the farmer who grew the opium.
The Lebanese police struck on Nov. 17. Th long wanted Abou Savia Basatni, his two sons and four other men were arrested. Thirty pounds of opium, nine pounds of hashish and 20 grams of morphine base were seized. Arrest in Syria Simultaneously Capt.
Azzizeh's customs men worked in cooperation with Syrian aurhorities who nabbed Abdullah Attie El Shaika at Latakia Syria, with 190 pounds of opium and 20 pounds of morphine. The drugs were about to be smuggled to France. Another U. S. narcotics agent had made contact in Aleppo with Hadji Abdullahab Tifankji, a prosperous sausage casin manufacturer with three wives.
15 children and a sideline--dope smuggling. Tifankji agreed to deliver 115 pounds of opium. The rendezvous: The home of one wife, in the back alleys of Aleppo, barred with an iron gate. Policemen dressed in Arab costume loitered in the dark alleys while the American agent entered the building alone. Once inside, he slipped back and unlocked the gate.
Polcie burst in and arrested 1Tifankit and two accomplices while they were handing over the dope. U. S. narcotics men had high praise for the Middle Eastern police who worked with them.
